Christmas in July…. It Might Just Happen Next Year

The holidays are one of my favorite times of the year. There’s seeing old friends and family that you haven’t seen all year. There are all of the delicious foods, and the fun you have trying to cook new recipes. Decorating the house/apartment/ wherever and whatever your digs might be. Last but not least is the shopping, especially Black Friday. Some people like Christmas so much they celebrate it in July.

The term Christmas in July originated from a French opera in 1892, Werther. It’s roughly about a group of children who rehearse a Christmas play in July, and one of the kids was like, “when you sing about Christmas in July, it’ll make the time go by faster, (because Christmas is so awesome).” A lot of time passed and a movie in America came out in the 40’s called Christmas in July. It made the term nationally known and people actually started having parties based on the term, in July. While it’s a funny term, and people have their silly fun parties in July, it could actually become more reality than not. Christmas-ness seems to be moving up on the calendar recently.

Like I have said, the holidays happen to be one of my favorite times of year. Especially when it is that time of year. I remember earlier when I was thinking about buying g my Halloween costume in September. I went to a certain big box store to go grocery shopping. I noticed an aisle past the vacuums that with some Halloween decorations and what not. Then I ended up in the garden section because I was thinking about picking up some of those solar garden lights you can put on a walkway (well, in my case it would be that small area outside of my apartment in front of my tiny little porch). To my surprise, in September, Christmas items were being stocked back there! Christmas trees, Christmas lights, stockings, wreaths, the works. I am a little clumsy and fell down and hit my head in the shower last week, so I was wondering if I had my months mixed up. I looked down at my phone, and it was in fact early September. This was like four months before the big day.

Along with moving up with the Christmas décor thing, Black Friday seems to be moving up in the dates this year too. A lot of stores seem to be having ‘pre’ Black Friday sales, a week or two before the actual big shopping hoopla. And some stores are opening waaaaay early on the actual day, Wal-Mart (before the big day) 10 P.M. on Thursday, and Target at midnight, along with a slew of a bunch of other stores. An article by CBS, “Black Friday: Coming Early This Year,” comments on this. They say it’s because of the hard times that retailers are having ‘Black Friday Now’ sales.

Either way, I like my holidays when it time for the holidays. I do, but I can’t lie, a little of this early-ness thing has rubbed off on me already. I kind of put my tree out and decorated it already. Who knows, I might be putting it up in July next year.
